After the farewell of the celebrating audience, a farewell dinner follows. Sylvia sensitively bids farewell to her lover, to the young Prince Edwin von Lippert-Weilersheim, who is determined to follow her all the way to America. But the Count's family stands on guard, since they want Edwin to marry Countess Stázi. Lieutenant Rohnsdorf, a reserve officer from Ulan, arrives with a military call-up arranged by the family to separate Edwin from Sylvia. So, Edwin leaves for military duty.

However, Edwin resists the family's machinations: he orders a notary to prepare a promissory note of his expected marriage to Sylvia within eight weeks.

But then Count Boni intervenes in the scene and presents a wedding invitation he has just received from Rohnsdorf...
